There are some 'hot spots' highlighted in the TODO file; you may want to contact Rob Leslie <rob@mars.org> to find out more about optimizing libmad. * When outputting decoded mp3s to files or stdout instead of a sound device, if the mp3s in question have different channels (stereo versus mono) or different bitrates, the sound file will come out fairly jumbled - playing at double-speed, or at the wrong intrinsic rate, or something else. This can be fixed within libao, but it is a non-trivial job.
